Kartong

The authentic fishing village of Kartong is the southernmost village of Gambia. Located on the coast and south of the Hallahin River, which is the border with Senegal, there is a small fishing port and Kartong Fishing Centre. In addition to the local daily market, there are several bars, restaurants and souvenir shops that provide a pleasant atmosphere.

Kartong is an obvious place to sit back and enjoy African village life. From Lemonfish it’s a 10 minute walk to the beach (no mass tourism) where you can swim, sunbathe and walk for miles. Kartong is only 40 minutes drive from Banjul Airport and the Senegambia tourist area.

Sleeping amongst art

Waking up amongst paintings by local artists and have a drink on the terrace while you enjoy the silence and the view. At breakfast on the veranda, you might see women on their way to water their gardens, a donkey cart passing by and the birds coming to drink from our pond.

For most activities you do not need to go far. Lemonfish is on the outskirts of the village of Kartong. The village, beach and the numerous birds are within walking distance. Take a piroque (boat) tour on the Hallahin river surrounded by mangroves, palms and baobabs where you can discover the most unusual birds such as the African Anhinga, several species of kingfishers, pelicans and maybe even the palm-nut vulture.
